In the Alert Sound window is a list of about 10 sampled sounds, that are invoked when a error message, or an alert box, etc. is displayed. Choose one of the descriptions, then click on the icon on the right which represents sound coming out of a speaker, to listen to that chosen sound. Again the System Alert Volume slide bar controls how loud it sounds, regardless of what setting you've set the general sound level is in the Sound section.
